If you have interesting photographs of Wivenhoe you would like to share, click reply at the end of this thread and create your post. Click the link below to view a technical article that explains how to display your images. I've added some information about how to do it in a few steps. How to add photographs to your postLink
Please note that the Add Attachment function is only available to forum staff.

Just to try it out, I tried (without success) to add a photo. Any suggestions?

My first attempt at adding a pic, anyone recognise where it’s from?

Think this is by the vets, Wivenhoe Cross. Shame it's spoilt by the garish modern arm additive instead of trying to keep it as it should be.

Can someone show me where to find the add attachment button?
Cancel that. Found what to do and that max file size is 1mb...
It'll need to be links to Twitter then, or perhaps a blog...

Facebook (for example) resamples them down when you upload there.

Part of Wivenhoe's maritime history was a rope works near Wivenhoe Cross. Specific lines within rigging and mooring ropes needed to be single lengths of rope, so ropeworks of the time required long narrow buildings, ropewalks, in which to manufacture. If you check the names of the building across the Avenue from Spring Lane you will find Ropery Cottage. What I hadn't realised is how far the ropewalk extended; it ran from a point just North of Spring Lane down the Avenue to just short of Harvey Road. The end of the building was opposite the entrance to the telephone exchange. The attached photo shows the Bing satellite map of Wivenhoe with a spyglass of OS 25 inch 1892-1914 map drawn to the same scale. The huge ropewalk can be seen clearly.
