The answer to that question is 7,637, at least that was the number in 2011. That was the time of the last Census. Many people will tell you that the number is over 10,000 people, and 10,025 people to be precise.
Why the difference? The first number is the number of people who live in the parish of Wivenhoe, where all of the homes are. The bigger number includes the large number of people who live at the University.

PS There is another census day coming up. It happens every ten years. Census day in 2021 is Sunday 21st March.
